Building the Mechanical Backbone of Hyperscale Data Centers

UPI-fabricated mechanical piping and modular pipe racks for mission-critical data center infrastructure.

As demand for digital infrastructure continues to grow, hyperscale data center construction requires mechanical systems that can be delivered with exceptional precision, speed, and reliability. Behind every mission-critical facility is an extensive network of piping and utility infrastructure that supports its operation.

At Universal Piping Industries (UPI), we specialize in the engineering, fabrication, and installation of industrial piping systems and modular mechanical infrastructure. Our integrated approach allows us to support complex data center developments while helping customers reduce field labor, improve coordination, and maintain demanding construction schedules.

From underground site utilities to prefabricated piping assemblies for Hot Aisle Containment (HAC) systems, UPI is helping build the mechanical backbone of the next generation of digital infrastructure.

Delivering Critical Piping Infrastructure for Hyperscale Projects

Hyperscale data center campuses present unique construction challenges. Large project footprints, accelerated schedules, and multiple trades working simultaneously require careful planning and precise execution. UPI addresses these challenges by combining engineering expertise, advanced fabrication capabilities, and experienced field installation teams.

At Project Barn in Saline, Michigan, UPI is delivering the design, fabrication, and installation of critical site piping infrastructure for a major hyperscale data center development.

Our involvement extends beyond site utilities. UPI's Kentucky fabrication facility is manufacturing the piping systems that support modular Hot Aisle Containment assemblies. The project includes fabrication support for approximately 29 miles of piping integrated into HAC systems, demonstrating our ability to execute largescale mechanical scopes through coordinated off-site production.

UPI has also expanded its mission-critical portfolio through AWS CMH220 in New Albany, Ohio, where our team delivered the site's underground piping infrastructure. Working as part of an integrated Kaiser Enterprise solution, UPI supported construction of another hyperscale facility while maintaining accountability for its piping scope.

The Role of UPI in Hot Aisle Containment Systems

Hot Aisle Containment systems are an important component of modern data center infrastructure, supporting the management of heated air within the facility.

While complete containment solutions involve multiple specialized disciplines, UPI contributes the piping infrastructure and fabricated assemblies that support these systems.

Our structural fabrication capabilities allow us to manufacture utility pipe racks, structural skids, and modular support systems in controlled shop environments.

These assemblies can then be integrated into larger containment modules before arriving at the project site.

One completed Kais-AIR® containment assembly featured in UPI's portfolio measured approximately 92 feet long, 16 feet wide, and 18 feet high, with UPI completing all piping associated with the system.

By performing this work off-site, UPI helps customers minimize field congestion, improve fabrication consistency, and streamline installation.

Advanced Fabrication Designed for Mission-Critical Construction

At our Georgetown, Kentucky fabrication facility, UPI combines skilled tradespeople with advanced manufacturing technology to produce complex mechanical assemblies.

Our capabilities include automated welding, precision pipe bending, digital fabrication workflows, and modular assembly.

Equipment such as our in-house Pines pipe bender allows our team to produce precision bends while reducing reliance on external fabrication resources.

These capabilities support a fabrication-first approach that prioritizes repeatability, quality control, and installation efficiency.

Rather than completing every component on a congested jobsite, UPI can fabricate and prepare major piping assemblies in advance, helping reduce field labor requirements and improve schedule predictability.

One Integrated Approach. Greater Project Accountability.

As part of Kaiser Enterprise, UPI can collaborate with affiliated companies to support complex, multi-discipline projects. For mission-critical data centers, this includes coordination with Kais-AIR® on modular infrastructure packages.

UPI remains responsible for delivering its specialized piping and fabrication scopes, providing customers with direct accountability throughout the process.

By combining in-house capabilities with strategic collaboration, we help developers and construction partners simplify coordination while meeting the demands of hyperscale construction.

Building the backbone of modernization starts with the infrastructure behind it.
